Mass of Thanksgiving and Candlelight Procession – September 10th

A candlelight procession follows a Mass of Thanksgiving at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi from 7:00PM to 9:00PM. This ceremony at the Cross of the Martyrs is perhaps the most visually stunning event of the Fiesta. It commemorates the death of 21 Franciscan friars and numerous Spanish colonists during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. It was dedicated during Santa Fe Fiesta of 1920. Hundreds of participants make their way through the historic downtown streets from the cathedral and up the hill to the Cross of the Martyrs (located on Paseo de Peralta between Otero St. and Hillside Ave.), where luminarias, a small festival or vigil bonfire, dot the hill and light the way of participants.
